Inferno Unleashed: 'Significant' Wildfire Rages on Tintwistle Moor, Warning Issued
A significant wildfire continues to rage on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop, prompting a multi-agency response from fire crews across Derbyshire and Greater Manchester. The blaze, which erupted on Wednesday evening, affects a substantial area of moorland and woodland, with authorities urging the public to avoid the area and keep windows closed for safety.
A significant wildfire continues to burn on Tintwistle Moor, near Glossop, having broken out at approximately 10pm on Wednesday evening, June 24. Large flames and plumes of smoke were initially visible from the Woodhead Pass, extending into the early hours of Thursday morning as the fire spread across moorland and woodland.
The Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) dispatched crews from Glossop and New Mills to the scene. For safety reasons, particularly due to failing light, these crews temporarily left the area just after 2am on Thursday. However, firefighters from Chapel-en-le-Frith, Buxton, and Hathersage were mobilised and returned to the scene by 4am to resume efforts to manage the blaze.
As of Thursday morning, the wildfire is still active, with considerable plumes of smoke visible over the moorland. The DFRS has characterized it as a 'significant' incident, affecting an estimated 400 square metres of moorland and woodland. Public safety remains a priority, with continuous appeals for people to avoid the area and for nearby residents to keep their windows and doors shut if they can see or smell smoke.
The firefighting operation is extensive, involving six fire engines, a water carrier, and a welfare unit. Crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, specifically from Hyde and Stalybridge stations, are providing crucial assistance. Collaborative efforts also include partners from the Peak District Fire Operations Group (FOG), such as Peak Park rangers, the Eastern Moors Partnership, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and United Utilities, all working together to tackle the incident.
Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, expressed his sorrow over the wildfire on Tintwistle Moor. He underscored the High Peak constituency's vulnerability to such fires, especially during periods of hot, dry weather. Mr. Pearce extended his gratitude to the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service for their tireless work through the night in challenging conditions, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in protecting moorlands and adhering to emergency services' advice.
