Sedina Prison Saga Deepens: Minister's Claims Questioned Amidst Public Outcry
A significant public and political debate continues over the whereabouts of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu post-conviction. While Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak insists she is in state custody, citing security for withholding location details, critics like MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah and anti-corruption campaigner Edem Senanu demand transparency, documentary proof, and greater accountability from the government.
An intense public and political debate continues to swirl around the exact whereabouts and custodial status of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe–Attionu, following her conviction in the MASLOC fraud case. Despite repeated assurances from government officials, opposition figures and anti-corruption campaigners are demanding greater transparency and verifiable proof of her incarceration.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has firmly dismissed claims that Sedina Tamakloe–Attionu is being held in a private residence or receiving preferential treatment. He insists that she has been in state custody since her return to Ghana and remains under the supervision of the Ghana Prisons Service, serving her term. When questioned about her specific location, the Minister stated that authorities are under no obligation to publicly disclose the prison facility for security reasons, especially concerning high-profile inmates. He suggested that such disclosure could even jeopardize the safety of the individual, drawing parallels to practices in other countries. Mr. Mubarak maintained that Tamakloe–Attionu is not receiving any special treatment and is subject to the same prison regulations as other inmates. He added that anyone seeking to verify her location or visit her could do so through the established procedures of the Ghana Prisons Service, requiring a request to the Director-General of Prisons and inmate consultation. The Minister rejected suggestions of government shielding due to personal or political ties, reaffirming commitment to the rule of law.
However, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has strongly questioned the government’s handling of information regarding Tamakloe–Attionu’s incarceration. He argued that the Interior Minister’s explanation has not resolved the matter, but rather deepened public suspicion and created more controversy. Nana Baffour Awuah insisted that authorities must provide documentary proof, such as warrants and formal handover records from law enforcement to the prison service, confirming that she is indeed serving her sentence in prison custody. He highlighted that the process of transferring a convicted person into prison custody follows clear legal and administrative procedures, all of which should be verifiable. The MP maintained that the absence of publicly accessible documentation undermines confidence in the government’s position and criticized suggestions that Parliament’s oversight role would not produce additional clarity, describing such a position as troubling for democratic accountability.
Adding to the chorus of criticism, anti-corruption campaigner Edem Senanu has accused political actors of turning the controversy into a mere political contest, emphasizing that the issue demands transparency and accountability. Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight, Mr. Senanu stated that the prolonged debate could have been resolved through straightforward disclosure by relevant authorities. He questioned why, if Tamakloe–Attionu is truly in prison custody, authorities cannot indicate the specific prison facility, arguing that while security concerns may exist, they do not fully justify complete secrecy. Senanu also criticized Parliament for not taking a more active role, suggesting lawmakers should have filed questions to compel the Interior Minister to provide comprehensive details. He warned that any inability of Parliament to obtain more information than what is publicly available could undermine confidence in its oversight responsibilities. Senanu stressed that the matter transcends partisan politics, concerning the public's fundamental right to know whether a person convicted of offenses against the state is serving the sentence imposed by the courts.
The ongoing lack of specific, verifiable details has fueled public interest and political controversy, intensifying calls for the government to provide greater clarity and uphold its commitment to transparency and accountability regarding Sedina Tamakloe–Attionu’s custodial status.
